PURRS

Brevard County, FL

YOU MAY KNOW PURRS AIMS TO FIX OVER 1,000 ANIMALS A YEAR AND PROVIDES ROUTINE AND EMERGENCY VET CARE FOR THE NEEDIEST CREATURES IN BREVARD;

HOWEVER,  DID YOU KNOW THAT PURRS…

  • Runs its own pet food bank to prevent low-income caregivers facing an economic downturn from surrendering their pets because they can’t afford to feed them? We give out over 150 large bags of food a year.
  • Altered a dozen domestic rabbits this year? Bunnies are the third-most commonly surrendered pet to most public shelters, and only a handful of veterinarians in Brevard will sterilize them.
  • Upon hearing that a low-income mobile home park was under county public health quarantine because a rabid raccoon was found on premises, offered FREE feline and canine rabies AND distemper vaccines to all residents who could not afford to inoculate their dogs or cats? This swift action prevented more un-immunized animals from being at risk, and helped bring “herd immunity” to the area so that future outbreaks in domestic animals would be minimized. We also update vaccines for animals going into pet-friendly hurricane shelters, so that none will be turned away.
  • Since its inception in 2010, has purchased over 300 humane traps? This effort to obtain high-quality, durable traps has TRIPLED the inventory of Brevard’s rescue organizations and is vital in controlling the overpopulation of ferals in our county, estimated to be between 50,000 to 250,000 cats.
  • Collects unused surgery supplies from a local eye clinic, sorts them and distributes these vital items for use by animal-oriented entities? Brevard Spay Neuter Clinic, Florida Wildlife Hospital, Brevard County animal shelters and individual rescuers all receive, on a monthly basis, medical items for FREE which would otherwise cost hundreds of dollars.
  • Donated a children’s book promoting spay/neuter and humane treatment of strays to all 17 Brevard County libraries? If things are going to change for the better, children must be educated on how to be compassionate AND effective advocates for animal welfare.
